Modern Data is the technical computing blog of Plotly. It was created to disseminate best engineering practices for real, programmatic backends in data science – namely Python/Pandas, IPython notebooks, R, Julia, and MATLAB.

Researchers and companies today combine, explore, and present data in realtime from disparate sources. In this dynamic landscape, agility is key, and traditional, GUI-based data science stacks no longer compete in flexibility, performance, or cost (compared to programmatic backends).

The backend solutions in Modern Data are programmatic, flexible, easy-to-learn by beginners, have enormous online communities, and utilize tools that are world-class but still free – Python, IPython notebooks, R and Ubuntu.
